PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The use of a high pressure water jetting system to clean pipes or tube bundles is one of the main work activities of the specialised cleaning worker. Specialised equipment is used for this function. In order to do this successfully, learners should be aware of the risks involved, should be able to use the equipment and follow standard procedures for the job activities involved.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to use a high pressure water jetting system to clean pipe or tube bundles.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare to clean pipes or tube bundles.
  • Use a high pressure water jetting system to clean pipes or tube bundles.

    It is assumed that the learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    Prepare to clean pipes or tube bundles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pipe and tube bundle types are listed in terms of material, and size. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The pipe and tube bundle types include may but are not limited to: Steel, plastic, Perspex, aluminium, copper and concrete.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected in terms of the substance to be removed or cleaned. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Tools, materials and equipment may include, but are not limited to: Pump unit, Hose, connectors, high pressure gun and accessories, lance and nozzle types and sizes.
  • Substances may include, but are not limited to: Polymers, sewerage, industrial product, food stuffs, pharmaceutical, petroleum products and mineral deposits etc.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The hazards and risks associated with the use of a high pressure water system are explained in terms of safety, health, surface damage and environmental effect. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Work related hazards and risks must include:
  • Persons in proximity of the water jetting unit in operation and associated accessories, water under pressure, condition of equipment, internal pipe and tube damage, flying debris, water quality, ergonomic requirements, deteriorated equipment, un-calibrated equipment, environmental conditions, health hazards such as occupational related injuries and diseases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected in accordance with worksite procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    PPE may include, but are not limited to: General PPE [hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, long sleeve overall, gloves and safety footwear] and industry specific PPE [rain suit, steel toe gum boots, face visor, turtle, suit/Kevlar suit etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Defective tools, materials and equipment are reported in accordance with worksite procedure or standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Clean pipes or tube bundles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A work area is laid out in accordance with the applicable worksite procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Layout includes, but is not limited to: Authorization, worksite procedure, barricading, equipment arrangement, and scope of work.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A high pressure water jetting system is assembled in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A high pressure water jetting system is used to clean pipes or tube bundles in accordance with work-site procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety measures may include, but are not limited to: High pressure gun safety triggers, foot valve, bursting disc, pressure relief valve and restrainers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of non-adherence to operational requirements are explained in terms of the impact on health, safety and the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences of non-adherence may include, but are not limited to: Legal implications, damage to equipment, property and environment, incidents and injuries.

    Tools, materials and equipment are cared for and stored in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and work-site procedure.
