PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who have responsibility to determine low air velocities and volume flow rates of air in a working place to ascertain whether conditions are within the prescribed limits and take appropriate action.

  • Describe the specified requirements pertaining to determining the velocity and volume flow rate of air by means of the smoke method.
  • Prepare to determine air velocity.
  • Determine and record air velocity, calculate the volume flow rate of air and take appropriate action.

    The limits for velocities and volume flow rates in the working place are explained to ensure a healthy, safe and productive environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for ventilating working places are discussed and explained in terms of specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principle of measuring velocities and volume flow rates, and the range and limitations, are explained to enhance a healthy, safe and productive environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The difference between velocity and volume flow rate of air are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to determine air velocity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The measuring equipment is examined and defects found are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of examining the measuring equipment and dealing with defects is explained in terms of the consequences to occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dangers of entering a working place without obtaining permission are explained in terms of the consequences to occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The position where measurements are to be taken is selected, examined and hazards and risks pertaining to occupational health and safety are dealt with. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine and record air velocity, calculate the volume flow rate of air and take appropriate action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The air velocity is determined and recorded and the importance of determining the air velocity as prescribed is explained in terms of the consequences to occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cross sectional area is determined and recorded and the importance thereof explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The volume flow rate of air is calculated and recorded in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The results are evaluated and appropriate action is taken, when applicable, to prevent unfavourable consequences to health and safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform post measurement activities.

    The equipment is cleaned and defective equipment is dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reports are compiled in the required format, and submitted to designated personnel in accordance with legal and site-specific requirements.
