PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who work with COIDA in the insurance sector. It requires the application of the Compensation For Occupational Injuries And Diseases Act, 130 of 1993, as amended to authentic situations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the statutory cover provided by COIDA.
  • Describing accident related injury benefits provided under COIDA.
  • Describing the death benefits provided for under COIDA.
  • Describing occupational disease benefits provided for under COIDA.
  • Applying underwriting criteria to a policy issued under COIDA.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • Events covered under COIDA include injury, death and occupational diseases.
  • Different classes of benefits include death, permanent disability, temporary disability and medical aid.
  • Accident benefits include death, permanent disability and temporary disability.
  • Death benefits paid under COIDA include funeral, pension, lump sum widow, lump sum partial dependents.
  • Lump sum benefits are applied in cases of permanent disability, and death.
  • Benefit categories are temporary disability, permanent disability less than 30% or greater than 30%.
  • Benefits in the case of fatal accidents include funeral expenses, pension and lump sum payments.
