PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for Skills Development Facilitators, Supervisors, Team Leaders, Line Managers and people involved in Human Resource Management. The term business unit in this Unit Standard implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the concept of mentoring.
  • Describing the characteristics of a good mentor.
  • Explaining the importance of knowledge in mentoring.
  • Applying the skills and techniques required of a mentor. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this Unit Standard. Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical and Financial Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is ethics and the learner.
  • Interpersonal skills include, but are not limited to, active listening, interpretation of answers and non-verbal communication, and empathy.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the concept of mentoring. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The concept of mentoring is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The difference between mentoring, coaching, counseling and training is explained and an indication is given of when each is appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The roles and responsibilities of the mentor and employee to be mentored are explained and an indication is given of the relationship between the two parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. A written contract including a code of ethical conduct in the relationship is negotiated with a prospective employee to be mentored. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The boundaries in a mentorship contract are negotiated with reference to realistic, agreed goals.

    Describe the characteristics of a good mentor.

    1. The importance of communication in the mentoring process is explained and an indication is given of how communication skills can enhance or destroy the relationship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The characteristics of a good mentor are identified based on personal experience and reflection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Three different models of mentoring are explained and an indication is given of the one that is most appropriate in a specific environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The characteristics of a potential employee to be mentored are identified and matched for compatibility with own personality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The consequences of a mismatch in the selection of mentor or employee to be mentored are identified with examples.

    Explain the importance of knowledge in mentoring.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The importance of relevant knowledge and experience in a mentoring situation is explained and an indication is given of why it is necessary to keep up to date. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Questions are asked to determine knowledge level in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Information required to fill knowledge gaps is accessed for a specific situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply the skills and techniques required of a mentor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Interpersonal communication skills required of a mentor are demonstrated for three different scenarios. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Relationships, dynamics and personality aspects in a situation are assessed using active listening and observation skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. A plan to mentor an individual is developed with reference to goal setting, critical path schedule, continuous monitoring and review. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Feedback on an individual`s progress is provided in terms of measured objectives and the negotiated mentoring contract. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA , or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
