PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can perform cleaning tasks in their specific workplace in the relevant wood products environment whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Remove waste (Range: all equipment, tools and the instruments).
  • Collect and clean all tools and instruments not being used at any one time and store in the designated storage facility.
  • Report any obvious malfunction of tools, instruments and equipment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this unit standard. Learners should be competent in communication and mathematical Literacy at ABET 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    (Choose from one of the following:) Wood Preservation, Tannin Extraction, Trusses, Charcoal Manufacture, Match Manufacture, Bulk Bin, Box and Pallet Repair and Manufacture, Veneer or Plywood, Fibreboard and Chipboard.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment, which covers the relevant workplace, with all its equipment, tools and instruments.
  • The spread of raw material and products produced by the operation.
  • The general work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to this workplace.
  • All the workers involved in this workplace.
  • All cleaning equipment, aids and materials that are used in this workplace.
  • The relevant storage facilities for the cleaning equipment, aids and materials, and procedures of keeping inventory.
  • The designated range of malfunctions the learner has for to watch out for.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in the wood products manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood products manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Remove waste.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Waste is removed from all surfaces, including all equipment, tools and instruments as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevant work surfaces, equipment tools and instruments are cleaned as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The cleaning process is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All waste is removed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The relevant waste is removed to the designated holding areas as prescribed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The waste removal process is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Collect and clean all tools and instruments not being used at any one time and store in the designated storage facility.

    The learner performs the task of collecting, cleaning and storing all these tools and instruments as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    These tools and instruments are collected, cleaned and stored as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    This task is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Report any obvious malfunction of tools, instruments and equipment.

    The learner performs this task as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Designated malfunctions are reported when they occur as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The task of detecting and reporting designated malfunctions is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or Inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purposely the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • An understanding of the procedures to keep the specific workplace in the relevant wood products plant clean to the prescribed standards.
  • Knowledge of NQF Level 1 requirements for the relevant work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental protection procedures.
