PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who negotiate in dealing with conflict situations. A learner credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Prepare for negotiations;
  • Conduct negotiations;
  • Conclude negotiations; and
  • Evaluate negotiations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners starting to learn towards this unit standard are proficient in Language, Literacy and Communication, including intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, at NQF level 4.

    It is recommended that a learner is proficient in the unit standard 'Conduct an in-depth analysis of and interpret conflict situations' before accessing this unit standard'.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Administrative arrangements for negotiation processes are identified and dealt with effectively. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Arrangements include dates, venue, transport, documents, safety, interpretation and expenses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of negotiation is explained and issues to be negotiated are clearly identified and prioritised, using participatory processes.

    Identification and prioritisation can take place within an individual or a group context.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A variety of negotiation strategies and processes are identified and explained in terms of process, application and strengths and weaknesses and an appropriate strategy is selected based on the negotiation at hand.

    The negotiation strategies include contemporary strategies such as distributive, integrative, positional, principled, interest-based, target-specific bargaining and problem-solving.

    Communication methods include pre-meetings of parties and/or exchanges of demands and counter demands.

    Appropriate actions are taken and initiated when obtaining mandates from constituencies.

    Skills include respect, empathy, authenticity, integrity and openness.

    Relevant options are identified, explained and explored throughout the process.

    Negotiations are conducted and appropriate action is taken and initiated to obtain an amended mandate.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Registered assessors must have a qualification in Conflict at NQF level 6 or higher or equivalent.
