PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be capable of identifying, containing, preventing and extinguishing different types of fires by operating basic fire fighting equipment.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identifying different types of fires.
  • Explaining and practice fire prevention.
  • Operating basic fire fighting equipment.
  • Perform basic fire fighting procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is desirable for learners wishing to achieve this unit standard to be competent at:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.

    The causes of fire are identified in accordance with industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of causes of fire include, but is not limited to:
  • People, electricity, spontaneous combustion, chemical reactions and liquefied petroleum gas.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The classes of fires are explained according to industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of classes of fires include, but is not limited to A, B and C.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain and practice fire prevention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prevention of fires is explained in relation to general organisational housekeeping. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of housekeeping includes, but is not limited to:
  • Blocking fire extinguishers and packing goods too close to electrical connections.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fire prevention is explained in relation to industry safe practices (OHS Act) and company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of non adherence to safe practices is explained in relation to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of consequences includes, but is not limited to:
  • Legal, financial and personal.

    Operate basic fire fighting equipment.

  • Fire extinguishers, fire hoses and hose reels.

    The type of fire fighting equipment is identified in relation to specific types of fires.

    Perform basic fire fighting procedures.

    The steps to be taken when fighting fires are explained and demonstrated in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The precautions to be taken when fighting fires are explained according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The steps to be taken when containing fires are described in accordance with organisational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
