PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify and read fixed electrical measuring instruments.
  • Identify and select portable electrical measuring and testing instruments.
  • Use and Interpret portable electrical measuring and testing instrument readings.
  • Care for portable electrical measuring instruments.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry (work environment).
  • Basic knowledge of circuit diagrams.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory.
  • Knowledge of electrical symbols.
  • Interpreting electrical drawings and circuits.
  • Statutory requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Portable electrical measuring instruments may include but are not limited to:
  • Multimeter (ohms, volts, amp`s).
  • Insulation tester, clip on ammeter, earth leakage polarity tester.

    Fixed electrical Panel type measuring instruments may include but not limited to:
  • Voltmeters.
  • Ammeters.
  • Energy meters (3-phase and single phase).
  • Frequency meters.

    Identification and display interpretation techniques include but are not limited to:
  • Numbers, scales, symbols, colours and description.
  • Meters will include analogue, digital and numeric types.

    Statutory requirements include:
  • OHS Act.
  • Local Authority requirements.

    Procedures and standards include manufacturer's specifications and worksite procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Electrical measuring instruments are handled in accordance with their specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Electrical measuring instruments are correctly applied to circuits and equipment when testing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Multimeters are set up for the correct function and scale of measurement in accordance with manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Meters and instruments must be placed and stored in accordance with manufactures specifications and worksite standards.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
