PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire knowledge of the scope and nature of lifting, positioning and securing steel structures. This includes communicating with the lifting plant operator to ensure the correct positioning of the components or sections of the steel structure. Learners who achieve the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of structural steel erectors within the construction industry.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Slinging equipment and methods are identified and described in relation to application and safe practice for lifting loads. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Slinging equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Slings, rope, shackles, eye bolts, spreader beams and equalising gear, clamps, pulley systems, chain blocks and pull lifts, winches, jacks, skids, skates and sliding shoes, rollers, cradle timbers, chocks and wedges, packers, fish-plates and bolts, feeler gauges, rigging screws, tirfors and turn buckles.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lifting equipment limitations and safety requirements are described in relation to the functions of the specific lifting equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods for the safe storage of lifting attachments are identified and described in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Communication signals are demonstrated in accordance with standard industry procedures and safety legislation requirements.

    Levels and set out alignments of structures are verified against drawing specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ground conditions are assessed in accordance with hoisting equipment manufacturer's specifications and unsuitable conditions are reported according to organizational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ground conditions assessment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Location of underground services, ground pressure and water tables.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Overhead hazards and location for erection of lifting equipment are identified according to municipal, safety and project requirements.

    Overhead hazards include, but are not limited to:
  • Power lines, telephone cables, bridge structures and buildings.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Weather conditions are assessed to ensure safe lifting operation according to organisational procedures.

    Erection work area is isolated by barriers in accordance with standard industry procedures and safety legislation requirements.

    Selected materials used for fixing, anchoring, bracing, supporting and securing are allocated in accordance with drawing specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Load connection is inspected and in accordance with good working practice, manufacturer's specifications and safety legislation requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Load connection equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Slings, rope, shackles, eye bolts, spreader beams and equalising gear, clamps, pulley systems, chain blocks and pull lifts, winches, jacks, skids, skates and sliding shoes, rollers, cradle timbers, chocks and wedges, packers, fish-plates and bolts, feeler gauges, rigging screws, tirfors and turn buckles.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lifted loads are guided towards located position in accordance with planned hazard prevention and control measures, manufacturer's operating instructions and safety legislation requirements.

    Stability of loads is maintained during lifting procedures in accordance with manufacturer and design engineer's specifications, safety legislation requirements and standard industry procedures.

    Load stability is maintained during positioning and securing procedures in accordance with safe working, practices.

    Loads are guided and placed in position according to drawing specifications and safe working practices.

    Loads are secured in accordance with design engineer's specifications. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.

    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively to guide the lifting and positioning of components/sections of a steel structure in the correct sequence and within given timeframes. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING 
    Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information on structural steel drawings in order to position the components in the correct sequence for the finishing off process of the erected steel structure. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Communicate effectively using appropriate modes of oral communication to guide the lifting equipment plant operator to position the sections/components of a steel structure according to the drawings.
