  • Explain the importance that plant preparation plays in ensuring quality displays.
  • Recognise the role that good preparation has in the sustainability of a display.
  • Utilise the necessary tools and materials for plant preparation.
  • Select the correct methods of preparation to suit various plant types.
  • Harden off plants to acclimatise them to the indoor environment.
  • Utilise knowledge of interior plant preparation for conducting interior plantscaping.

    Apply health and safety principles and practices in pre-delivery plant preparation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of wearing personal protective clothing is explained in terms of company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The necessity of using the PPE is explained in terms of the purpose of preventing safety incidents when preparing plants according to procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The precautions that must be taken during the handling of toxic plant material to ensure that health regulations are adhered to and are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The safety practices that must be followed while handling hazardous chemicals are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safe use of pruning equipment are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The correct lifting techniques for moving/transporting plants/containers to ensure no injuries are sustained are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the pre-delivery plant preparation processes and the role that this has in ensuring a quality display.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role that the pre-delivery preparation of plants has on the ultimate quality of the interior display is explained in terms of the quality control function that the process performs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The influence that the correct plant selection has on the sustainability of a plant display is described in terms of the suitability of the plants to the specific environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of well prepared plants is explained in respect of the positive impact that these have on a client's perception of quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The possible consequences of installing poorly prepared plants are described in terms of the client's negative perception of a plantscaper's service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The practices to dress plants prior to dispatch are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The function and purpose of checking the caps and plugs of plant containers is described in respect of the quality control that is ensured according to the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Select the appropriate tools and equipment and carry out the pre-delivery preparations.

    The various plant cleaning tools are selected for their suitability to particular plant types.

    The procedures for transferring the plants from the holding area to the preparation area are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The handling practices that should be adhered to when preparing toxic plants are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The methods of plant cleaning are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The methods of providing adequate water to the plants according to ensure the maintenance of quality are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    Describe the factors that influence productivity and quality assurance in plant preparation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The timing of plant preparation is explained in terms of the influence that this has on the ultimate quality of a plant display. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of returning unsuitable plants are explained in respect of the loss of productivity and profitability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ideal layout of a preparation work area is described in relation to the facilitation of productivity in plant preparation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of maintaining good communication between the installation and preparation teams is described in terms of the benefits that has on productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The necessity of maintaining quality assurance throughout the preparation phase is explained in terms of the minimising of plant returns and complaints. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
