PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Unit Standard will be useful for people wish to complete at NQF Level 2 Learnership in lumber milling.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Understand the purpose and set up of conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products.
  • Set-up and operate conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products to the prescribed standards produce the required surfacing and thicknessing.

    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect all the prescribed setting up tools and equipment and cutting tools (blades, knives) for the conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The availability of required tools for setting up conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products ensures successful execution of surfacing and thicknessing operations in the Dry Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct tools for setting up the conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products are assembled timeously. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up the conversion equipment used for surfacing and thicknessing products and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for the assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator(s) accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).

    The Learner will be have acquired the detailed knowledge and understandig of and skills relating to:
