PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Each learner must be able to identify and respond to factors, faults or incidents which increase the safety risk for staff and customers. The learner must be able to use all relevant technology and understand how maintaining a safe working environment impacts positively on revenue for the business.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Describe and discuss the importance of legislative, company procedures and policies with regards to maintaining a safe working environment. 
OUTCOME NOTES 
1. Describe legislative and company procedures to maintain a safe working environment.

2. Stress the importance of maintaining a safe working environment for staff and customers and explain the cost for the organisation of not doing this.

3. Describe safety procedures for avoiding accidents in the work place.

4. Describe safety and evacuation procedures, (including the nominated assembly point) in the event of a fire. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
The legislative and company procedures in maintaining a safe working environment is described. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
The importance of maintaining a safe working environment for staff and customers and the cost for the organisation if not doing so is emphasised and explained. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Explain the necessity for displaying safety signs and emergency contact numbers in the workplace and how they contribute to the elimination of accidents and how it affects performance.

Safety procedures for avoiding accidents in the work place are described. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
Safety and emergency signs are located, identified and observed by everyone in the organisation. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
A list of safety and emergency telephone numbers are displayed at a known point 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
The way in which performance is adapted around safety in a different service sector is explained. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
Assist a member that has been involved in an accident by following the first aid procedures of the organisation. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
The first aid officers and the location of first aid boxes in the organisation are identified. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
The responsible first aid officer for an accident is contacted and the person is assisted within own area of responsibility. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
The range of accidents is: Fall, faint, slip, drop items, spill food/drink.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Possible actions are taken for an accident which involves staff and/or customers and reasons for the decisions explained. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
Describe and demonstrate the procedure, including the nominated assembly point, to be followed by locating and extinguishing a fire using the correct extinguisher and evacuation procedure. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
Hazards or potential hazards are identified and the appropriate procedures are followed. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
Emergency situations when normal procedures cannot be followed are described. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
The appropriate fire extinguisher is located and used to extinguish a small fire. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
The range of fire extinguishers is: Carbon dioxide, foam, powder, fire hose, and fire blanket.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
The fire alarm for a large fire is raised and the correct evacuation procedure to the designated assembly point is followed. 


UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered with the FE/HE Registrar.

3. Any institution wishing to receive skill development grants must be accredited with the relevant ETQA. Such an institution will also be registered with the relevant SETA.

4. Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. 

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
Embedded knowledge and Critical cross-field outcomes have been included within the specific outcomes category.
This has been done as it was deemed necessary to ensure holistic assessment occurred.

The specific outcomes can be applied in a range of contexts.

Many of the outcomes have been written in such a way that competence must be demonstrated in the context as opposed to in isolation from a context.

The specific outcomes are comparable to outcomes used internationally.

We therefore structured outcomes using the format noun + verb + condition (modifying phrase)Specific outcomes have been split into three categoriesa) knowledge and understanding (what the learner must know and understand)b) decision-making and acting (what the learner must do)c) adapting performance ( including reflexive competence)In many instances there are more than six specific outcomes, as the inclusion of critical cross-field outcomes and embedded knowledge has increased the number of specific outcomes.

If competencies are to be clustered in a meaningful way, then these unit standards cannot be split.

UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
Essential embedded knowledge is dealt with under the specific outcomes section where "demonstrated KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING" is required.

Recommendations and Exemplars for the design of:

Learning/Curriculum
  • The learner should become familiar with all company procedures relating to accidents, hazards, safety officer, emergency signs and exits.
  • The learner should practise what to do in the event of an accident through the role-plays.
  • The learner should locate all the extinguishers in own department and know how to raise the alarm. The learner should practice the fire evacuation procedure to the nominated assembly point.
  • Special emphasis must be placed on preventative action that can be taken to avoid accidents, fires and hazards for staff and customers.
  • Potential exercise: Learners could draw up a list of hazards and potential hazards in their working environment. Solutions for all hazards should then be explored and where possible suggestions should be implemented.
  • Learner should draw up a floor plan of the work environment. Fire extinguishers (different types) could be marked on the plan together with the evacuation route.
    Performance systems
  • Ongoing measurement of the learner`s ability to meet this standard is recommended.
